Kids love to count, so "Counting the Omer" is a perfect opportunity to teach math, English and values all at the same time!
Beginning on the 2nd day of Passover, we count each day for 49 days until Shavuot.
49 is 7x7, or seven weeks.
The 50th day is Shavuot, when we received the Torah on Mt. Sinai
Activity:
Print a 7 week calendar for each child
Give a set of stickers for each week. The stickers can be in themes according to the weeks. For Example,
Week 1: Kindness - happy face stickers
Week 2: Self discipline - reading books
Week 3 - Beauty - flowers
Week 4 - Fortitude - thumbs up or "good job"
Week 5 - Humility - hearts
Week 6 - Friendship - fruit, candy or gifts
Week 7 - Leadership - Torah stickers
The kids should keep their calendars up to date by putting on stickers and naming the day (today is 14 days, which is 2 weeks of the Omer). They can also count how many more days until Shavuot. Don't forget that the 33rd day is Lag b' Omer!
Note: the Omer was a measure of wheat in biblical times.
