Kids will want to do this Chanukah play more than once!

Rebuild the Temple

Oh no! The Beit HaMikdash has been destroyed! It's all dirty, and the menorah is broken! We need to

sweep it clean and build a new menorah. Throw those idols in the trash. Chase away those pigs!

Kids love to re-enact the story of Chanukah. The children begin by cleaning up the Temple. They can use pantomime to sweep or get real brooms. The idols can be small toys or stuffed animals which are thrown away into a basket. The menorah can be rebuilt using building blocks. You will be the narrator the first time, but the kids will want to take over the second and third time they do the play.

Light the Menorah (the narrator tells the story as the children act out the parts)

We need pure oil to light the menorah. Let's look for some oil. (a pretend jar of oil should be hidden where everyone knows where it is). Look, here's a jar of oil with the seal of the Kohen Gadol, but it's only enough for one day! What should we do? Should we light it anyway? Yes? OK, but who will go and get more oil from Tekoa? Great, get on your horse and go! It will take eight days to get there and come back. Let's light the menorah now and pray for a miracle. (One child pretends to light the menorah) Oh, it's so beautiful! Look! It's day 2 and it's still lit! It's a miracle! (all together) Look, it's day 3. It's a miracle!  Look, it's day 4. It's a miracle! (Continue counting to day 8)

Man on the horse returns with new oil and everyone shouts "Hurray! We have a new Beit HaMikdash! Happy Chanukah!"
